Dental Health and Your Pet

Caring for your pet’s oral health may seem difficult, but it not only helps keep their breath fresh, it is also important to their overall health. Periodontal disease is the most common dental problem in dogs and cats. It can be seen in most dogs and cats by age three. Brushing the teeth and dental treats are usually only helpful at the very early stages of periodontal disease. At the later stages of periodontal disease, the tartar buildup is too hardened for brushing or treats to help

Stage 3 periodontal disease

So how can you help?

1.    Brushing is the best thing you can do before there periodontal disease is an issue.  Start your pet young to get them used to brushing.  Check out our facebook page for demonstration videos!
2.    Professional cleanings should be done when recommended by your veterinarian.  This will help prevent the periodontal disease from progressing when brushing can no longer remove tartar buildup.
3.    Treats can be a great way to supplement brushing or used in place of brushing for pets that will not accept brushing.  When deciding what product to recommend, we look at the Veterinary Oral Health Counsel accepted products.  These are products in which the claims of the manufacturing company have been verified.  Check to see if the product you use is listed here http://www.vohc.org/accepted_products.htm
