Transitioning Pet Foods

Jamie, RVT

Switching your dog’s food/diet or even the flavor of the same brand abruptly can cause intestinal upset such as diarrhea, vomiting, and a decreased appetite. This is caused because the digestive enzymes in a dog’s gastrointestinal system cannot fully process the components in the new diet. Anytime you decide to change your dog’s food/diet or flavor you should transition to the new diet gradually by mixing your dog’s current food/diet with the new one. Over 7 days, gradually decrease the amount of the current dog food while increasing the amount of the new food. This will give your dog’s digestive tract time to adjust to the new food and make the transition easier. Please contact our office if you have any questions regarding your pet’s diet or health concerns.
